Barcelona’s Summer 2025 Transfer Plans: Strengthening Three Key Positions

Why Barcelona Is Targeting Three Key Positions This Summer

Manager Hansi Flick has communicated to President Joan Laporta the urgent need to strengthen the squad to stay competitive at the highest level. The club’s sporting director, Deco, is working on a transfer plan that balances ambition with financial responsibility, focusing on players who can make an immediate impact without breaking the bank.

Barcelona’s summer transfer strategy revolves around shoring up the defense, midfield, and attack — areas where depth and quality will be essential for the demanding season ahead.

1. Defensive Reinforcement: The Hunt for a Top-Class Right-Back and Centre-Back

One of the main priorities is signing a high-quality right-back to challenge Jules Koundé and provide competition in defense. Initially, Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong was the frontrunner, but Barcelona’s optimism has waned due to strong competition from Liverpool and Aston Villa.

As a result, Barcelona has identified three alternatives: Vanderson (AS Monaco), Dodo (Fiorentina), and Marc Pubill (UD Almería). Vanderson, admired by Deco, is a long-term target but could be expensive due to his contract running until 2028. Dodo offers a more affordable option, with Fiorentina reportedly willing to sell for around €25 million. Pubill, a young Spanish talent, remains on Barcelona’s radar after a blocked move last summer due to financial fair play rules.

In central defense, the Catalan giants is eyeing Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen, whose contract expires this summer. Tah’s arrival would add much-needed depth and could pave the way for Andreas Christensen’s potential departure.

2. Midfield Mastery: The Joshua Kimmich Pursuit

Barcelona’s midfield needs reinforcement, especially after the departure of club legend Sergio Busquets. The club has set its sights on Joshua Kimmich from Bayern Munich, a versatile and experienced midfielder known for his tactical intelligence and leadership.

At 29, Kimmich would bring stability and quality to the midfield, complementing young talents like Marc Casadó and Pedri. His signing would be a statement of intent, signaling Barcelona’s ambition to dominate the midfield battles in La Liga and the Champions League.

3. Attacking Options: Replacing and Supporting Lewandowski

With Robert Lewandowski aging, Barcelona is planning for the future by targeting young, dynamic forwards. Canadian striker Jonathan David from Lille is a prime candidate, with his contract also expiring this summer. David is seen as a long-term replacement who can bring pace, skill, and goal-scoring ability to the Camp Nou frontline.

Additionally, Barcelona continues to pursue Nico Williams from Athletic Club, a talented winger who could add creativity and depth to the attack. If Williams proves unattainable, Liverpool’s Luis Díaz is another option under consideration.

There are also whispers of a potential sentimental signing: Neymar, who recently returned to Santos and whose contract expires this summer. A free transfer back to Barcelona would excite fans, though his age and fitness remain factors to consider.

Smart Transfers for a Sustainable Future

Barcelona’s approach this summer is marked by a focus on free agents and players with expiring contracts, minimizing transfer fees while maximizing squad quality. This strategy reflects the club’s commitment to financial sustainability while remaining competitive.

The club is also expected to offload up to eight players, including Frenkie de Jong, to balance the books and create space for new arrivals.

What This Means for Barça Fans

The summer of 2025 promises to be an exciting period for Barcelona supporters. With a blend of experienced stars like Kimmich and promising young talents such as Jonathan David and Nico Williams, the squad looks set to evolve while maintaining its core strengths.

Barcelona’s transfer plans show a club determined to build on its recent success, ensuring that the team remains a powerhouse in Spanish and European football for years to come.

Summary: Barcelona’s Summer 2025 Transfer Wishlist

  • Right-Back: Jeremie Frimpong (primary), Vanderson, Dodo, Marc Pubill (alternatives)
  • Centre-Back: Jonathan Tah (priority target)
  • Midfield: Joshua Kimmich (key target)
  • Attack: Jonathan David, Nico Williams, Luis Díaz, Neymar (potential free agents)
