Liton Das

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially named Liton Das as the new T20I captain of the national cricket team. The 30-year-old wicketkeeper-batter will take charge immediately. He will remain skipper until the T20 World Cup 2026, marking a new chapter in Bangladesh’s white-ball cricket ambitions.

This appointment comes ahead of an exciting T20I calendar. It includes high-stakes series against the UAE, Pakistan, and a potentially historic home series against India — the first-ever T20I series on Bangladeshi soil between the two nations.

A Proven Leader : Liton Das

Liton Das isn’t new to captaincy. He has already led Bangladesh in all three formats and holds a decent record. As skipper, he has lost just 4 out of 11 matches. His calm demeanor and tactical clarity stood out during the clean sweep against West Indies last year, when he served as a stand-in captain.

Selectors recently dropped Liton from the ODI plans and excluded him from the Champions Trophy 2025. However, his consistent T20I performance and seniority made him the top candidate after Najmul Hossain Shanto stepped down earlier this year.

New Vice-Captain, Fresh-Looking Squad

Supporting Liton in leadership will be all-rounder Mahedi Hasan, named vice-captain for the T20I setup. The BCB has also announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming series against UAE and Pakistan. Key inclusions like Shanto and Towhid Hridoy bring balance, while some experienced names like Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taskin Ahmed have been left out.

Bangladesh T20I Squad (UAE and Pakistan Series):
Liton Das (c), Tanzid Hasan, Parvez Hossain Emon, Soumya Sarkar, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain, Jaker Ali, Rishad Hossain, Mahedi Hasan (vc), Tanvir Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Tanzim Sakib, Nahid Rana, Shoriful Islam.

India Series in Doubt?

Liton’s biggest test as captain is expected to be against India, with a five-match T20I series scheduled in August 2025. However, the tour’s future is uncertain due to political tensions between the two nations following controversial remarks by a Bangladeshi political figure. Any official decision from the Indian government or the BCCI could impact this landmark series.
