Cristiano Ronaldo, a name synonymous with excellence in football, has once again etched his name in history. The Portuguese superstar was honored by the Guinness World Records for securing 132 international victories, the most by any player in men’s football. The recognition came during a special ceremony held before Portugal’s UEFA Nations League clash against Denmark on Monday.

Despite this remarkable achievement, the night was a rollercoaster of emotions for Ronaldo. The game at Estadio José Alvalade saw the veteran forward face early frustration before eventually redeeming himself in a thrilling contest.

Penalty Miss and Redemption

Portugal was awarded a penalty in just the sixth minute when Danish defender Patrick Dorgu was penalized for a foul on Ronaldo inside the box. The Al-Nassr striker stepped up with confidence, but his effort was too predictable. Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel read the shot perfectly, diving to his left and denying the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Ronaldo continued to push forward despite the setback, creating multiple chances but failing to find the net in the first half. He was denied yet again when his close-range header was expertly saved by Schmeichel, adding to his frustrations on the night.

However, Portugal leveled the game just before halftime when Bruno Fernandes’ corner led to an own goal by Denmark’s Joachim Andersen. The goal injected new energy into the Portuguese side as they searched for a second to take control of the tie.

Ronaldo’s Moment of Glory

The second half saw Portugal persistently attacking, and Ronaldo finally had his moment in the 72nd minute. Latching onto a rebound, the legendary forward smashed the ball into the net, sparking wild celebrations.

The crowd erupted as Ronaldo delivered his iconic “Siu” celebration, soaking in the moment of redemption. His goal tied the score on aggregate, ensuring Portugal stayed in contention.

Manager and Teammates React

Following the match, Portugal’s manager Roberto Martinez and his squad shared their joy while addressing the recent wave of criticism directed at the team. Martinez was vocal in defending his players, emphasizing the importance of unity.

“I think today we had a feast of football and that’s important. The Selecao is not for criticizing the coach or to have a debate. It’s for us to be proud, to enjoy the players we have.”

Roberto Martinez

Martinez highlighted the blend of experience and youth within the squad, pointing out milestones like Bernardo Silva’s 100th appearance for Portugal and young talents making their way into the team.

“I’d like to say that all the fans, the Portuguese people, should be very proud of this team. The first game did not go well, we accept that, but today we used the advantage of playing in front of our own fans to create a special atmosphere, which helped a lot.”

He further praised his team’s resilience and attacking intent, noting that scoring five goals was a testament to their efforts in wiping away the disappointment of their previous performance.
