Chennaiyin FC’s Reserve Team Embarks on a 6 Week Training Stint at Norwich City’s Facility

Chennaiyin FC is set to send its U-23 squad on a six-week exposure tour to Norwich City FC’s training complex at Carrow Road in London. This initiative marks another step in the club’s ongoing efforts to elevate its youth development structure.

The partnership between Chennaiyin and Norwich, established in April last year, has already yielded positive outcomes at the grassroots level. The collaboration saw Chennaiyin’s U-12 squad participate in the prestigious MINA Cup, where they competed against elite academies such as Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, and Arsenal.

A Strategic Move for Player Development

The club’s management is working diligently to finalize the list of players who will benefit from this experience. Chennaiyin’s technical committee, alongside the head of youth teams, is currently in the process of shortlisting two to three promising individuals for the tour.

We have not finalized the names yet, but we are keen on selecting players who will benefit the most from this experience and have the potential to break into the first team. We hope to announce the selected players in the coming months,” said Akhil Prakash, COO of Chennaiyin FC.

With the focus on grooming young talents, the club remains open to including players from the senior squad, particularly those under 21, if their schedules permit. “We are open to all possibilities. Any player who can benefit from this experience will be given the opportunity,” Prakash added.

Norwich’s Commitment to the Partnership

The collaboration between the two clubs extends beyond mere player exchanges. Norwich City’s academy manager, Joe Shulberg, will play a crucial role in evaluating the shortlisted players before the final selection.

Sam Jeffery, Commercial Director of Norwich City FC, emphasized the importance of the tour and its potential benefits for Chennaiyin’s emerging talents.

Discussions are ongoing regarding the U-23 squad’s visit. It would be a fantastic initiative, but we need to ensure it aligns with FIFA regulations and does not clash with the start of our respective seasons,” Jeffery told DT Next.

If all the pieces fall into place, it will be a great opportunity for some of Chennaiyin’s top youth players to train at our facilities,” he added.

A Training Period of Significance

The six-week stint will provide Chennaiyin’s young talents with an immersive footballing experience, allowing them to develop under world-class conditions. Jeffery highlighted the significance of the program, comparing it to the rigorous pre-season preparations of professional teams.

Even trialists usually spend just one or two weeks with a club, perhaps playing a game or two. But six weeks is a significant period of time. It allows for proper acclimatisation and meaningful development,” he stated.

This extended training period will give Chennaiyin’s players the chance to absorb European footballing methodologies, enhance their tactical understanding, and refine their skills against high-caliber competition.

Expanding the Footballing Ecosystem

Chennaiyin FC’s commitment to nurturing young talent extends beyond overseas training opportunities. Earlier this year, the club and Norwich collaborated on an inter-school tournament that featured 64 teams. Following the success of this initiative, Chennaiyin FC aims to make the competition an annual event, with plans to expand to Coimbatore next year.
