IPL 2025: Chetan Sakariya Replaces Injured Umran Malik at KKR

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have officially announced the inclusion of left-arm fast bowler Chetan Sakariya as a replacement for the injured Umran Malik ahead of IPL 2025.

Malik, who has been out of action since IPL 2024, was expected to make a comeback in domestic cricket but has faced multiple setbacks due to health and injury concerns. Sakariya, who was already training with the squad as a net bowler, now steps in as a key addition to KKR’s pace attack.

Umran Malik’s Injury Woes

Once considered India’s next big fast-bowling sensation, Umran Malik has struggled with fitness in recent times. The 25-year-old, known for his raw pace exceeding 150kph, first made headlines in IPL 2021. However, his career has been marred by injuries and illness.

Malik was initially scheduled to participate in the Duleep Trophy at the start of the 2024-25 domestic season but was forced to withdraw after contracting dengue. His condition worsened when he suffered a hip fracture, ruling him out of competitive cricket for an extended period. His last professional appearance came during IPL 2024, where he played just one match for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

The right-arm speedster has represented India in eight T20Is, picking up 11 wickets, but has struggled with an expensive economy rate of 10.48. His absence leaves KKR without a like-for-like Indian fast bowler to complement South African pacer Anrich Nortje, who has also been injury-prone.

Sakariya’s Return to Competitive Cricket

Chetan Sakariya, who has previously played two T20Is for India, is returning to professional cricket after an injury setback of his own. The left-arm pacer was last seen in action during the Ranji Trophy in February 2024.

Sakariya was originally bought by KKR in the IPL 2024 auction but had to miss the season due to injury. However, he remained connected to the franchise, training as a net bowler before being named as Malik’s replacement. His inclusion could serve as a backup for Australian pacer Spencer Johnson, KKR’s first-choice left-arm seamer.

Sakariya’s Excitement to Rejoin KKR

Expressing his delight at rejoining KKR, Sakariya shared his thoughts on being back with the team. “I feel very happy. It feels like I never left the squad, and have just rejoined the team the next year with the same energy and in the same environment,” Sakariya said.

The 26-year-old pacer also expressed his gratitude to the franchise for showing faith in him. “I am very grateful to the KKR management for trusting me. I am in a good state of mind and I have prepared well.”

Working with KKR’s Coaching Staff

One of the key factors in Sakariya’s excitement is the opportunity to work under KKR’s esteemed coaching staff, which includes Bharat Arun and Dwayne Bravo. “In our coaching staff, we can work on our technical aspect as well as tactical. We have the combination of both,” he stated.

“If we need any help with planning for a match, we can go to DJ Bravo, and if there’s an issue with our rhythm or something, Bharat Arun is renowned for that. So we fast bowlers will get both benefits here.”

This structured coaching setup could help Sakariya refine his skills as he aims to make an impact for KKR in IPL 2025.

KKR’s Title Defense and Squad Depth

KKR head into IPL 2025 as the defending champions, having secured the trophy after defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2024 final. The addition of Sakariya provides the squad with much-needed depth in the pace department, especially with Malik’s injury leaving a gap in the fast-bowling unit.

With Spencer Johnson and Anrich Nortje leading the pace attack, Sakariya’s inclusion ensures that KKR have a reliable Indian pace option at their disposal. His ability to swing the new ball and bowl effectively in the death overs makes him a valuable asset.
