In just over a month, players will get a clearer picture of the Switch 2 when Nintendo showcases it during a Nintendo Direct on April 2. And because the company had to submit technical details to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ahead of time, a couple of key specs have trickled out already.

Nintendo Switch 2 Details Leak Ahead of Nintendo Direct, Confirming NFC, Wi-Fi 6, and Dual USB-C Ports

The FCC has released part of the Switch 2’s technical specifications, as reported by The Verge. Most of these filings are filled with legalese but do confirm that the console will support near-field communication (NFC). This is the same tech that allowed Amiibo figures to work with the original Switch and unlock unique in-game content. Now, same as the first Switch, the radio-frequency identification (RFID) part is found in the right Joy-Con. This doesn’t directly announce Amiibo support, but it strongly implies the feature will return.

The FCC docs also confirm that the Switch 2 will support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) with up to 80MHz bandwidth, an upgrade from the original Switch’s Wi-Fi 5. However, it will not be compatible with the newer Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7. The filings also reinforce the information that the console will have two USB-C ports — one at the top and another at the bottom — meaning that it can be charged through both ports.

Outside of that hardware information, a previously filed Japanese patent application outlines new Joy-Con features that could allow the controllers to operate like a computer mouse. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has also said recently that the company must “go beyond video games,” to be able to connect with users in new ways. Whatever the implications of that quote, though, we now know what Nintendo is shooting for with the Switch 2: a more holistic interactive experience.

As the reveal date approaches, these details are leading to a growing sense of anticipation. The silver lining for players is that they won’t have to wait a great deal longer to receive a comprehensive rundown on all the features that the Switch 2 has to offer, with Nintendo gearing up to share more concrete details at its April event.
