What You Get with YouTube Premium Lite

YouTube Premium Lite is designed for viewers who primarily watch standard YouTube videos but don’t use the platform for music streaming. Here’s what subscribers can expect:

✔ Ad-Free Viewing: Enjoy most YouTube videos without interruptions. ✔ Affordable Price: At $7.99 per month, it’s significantly cheaper than the $13.99 standard YouTube Premium plan. ✔ Seamless Experience: No more pesky ads breaking your binge-watching sessions.

What’s Missing?

While the new plan offers an ad-free experience for most videos, there are some notable limitations:

❌ No Background Play: Unlike the full Premium subscription, Lite users won’t be able to listen to videos while their screen is locked or when using other apps. ❌ No Offline Downloads: Users can’t save videos for offline viewing. ❌ Ads on Music Content: Music videos and YouTube Shorts may still contain ads. ❌ No YouTube Music Premium: The Lite plan doesn’t include ad-free access to YouTube Music, unlike the full Premium plan.

Why Did YouTube Introduce Premium Lite?

YouTube has recognized a demand among users who want an ad-free video experience but aren’t interested in paying for YouTube Music. The company has been testing this plan in various regions, including Australia, Germany, and Thailand, and saw positive results—with some users even upgrading to the full Premium package over time.

The new subscription tier comes as YouTube continues to grow its paid subscriber base. In March 2024, YouTube reported surpassing 125 million paying subscribers, marking a significant rise from 100 million in January of the same year.

How Does It Compare to Other Streaming Services?

With this new offering, YouTube aims to compete directly with platforms like Netflix and Disney+, which also provide multiple subscription tiers. While Netflix and Disney+ have introduced ad-supported plans, YouTube is taking the opposite approach—offering a cheaper ad-free tier with some limitations.

Will Premium Lite Expand Beyond the US?

Currently, YouTube Premium Lite is only available in the United States, but the company has indicated plans to expand the offering to additional countries later this year.

Final Thoughts: Is YouTube Premium Lite Worth It?

If you’re someone who wants an ad-free YouTube experience but doesn’t care about music streaming, background play, or offline downloads, YouTube Premium Lite could be a great cost-effective alternative to the full Premium plan. However, if you rely on YouTube Music or need background play, sticking with the standard $13.99 Premium plan might be a better choice
