Since September 2024, Google has been working on a feature to add a customizable shortcut to the Google app’s widget, and it has finally begun rolling out to users. The new shortcut is meant to add some flair to the Google widget so you can effortlessly open your most-used apps and services with a tap, and not necessarily look like the stock Pixel Launcher Google Search bar.

Already available on the stable version of Google App version 16.3.34 mark for device users, the feature was something expected to roll out on supported devices in official news.

Google Search Widget Now Lets You Set a Custom Shortcut on Android Devices: Here’s What You Need to Know

This is different from the beta versions where the shortcut was part of a carousel but now appears as its own section in the widget customization screen. This section allows users to choose from multiple options. Shortcuts available in games include Google Search for translations, Google Lens for image searches, song searches, for today’s weather, program scores for sports, games, and dictionary lookups, providing homework assistance using Google Lens, and granting finance assistance.

By default, the shortcut shows “None” until you change it on the Google App’s settings or (long-pressing the widget on your home screen and) edit. The little shortcut to the left of the default Lens and Voice Search icons is part of the 4×1 search box widget. In fact, even the shortcut is available when the widget is collapsed back to its smaller-sized 3×1 format. This uses very little screen real estate so it works well for users who want the feature without sacrificing screen space for a smaller widget.

However, one thing to note is that the shortcut currently lacks Material You theming, which could make it stand out visually, especially on a home screen that is otherwise color-matched. It doesn’t blend in seamlessly just yet; however, the feature provides quite a bit of functionality, and future updates may improve its appearance.

FAQs
