Honda has debuted its next-generation e:HEV hybrid powertrains, which will be utilized in new hybrid-electric vehicles in the near future. Announced at a press event in Tokyo on December 18th, 2024, this announcement is one of the most important steps forward on hybrid technology for the company. These new systems expand on Honda’s earlier 2-motor e:HEV hybrid setup but incorporate a number of important upgrades designed to enhance fuel economy and performance.

Honda’s Next-Gen e:HEV Hybrid Powertrains to Launch with 2025 Prelude Coupe for Better Efficiency
The new system offers two sizes of e:HEV systems: a smaller 1.5L engine will power smaller vehicles, while a 2.0L engine will be used in mid-sized models. Both will have three modes — EV Drive Mode (fully electric), Hybrid Drive Mode (the car will be powered using the electric motor but the engine will act as a generator), and Engine Drive Mode (the engine will drive the wheels directly via the clutch). The latter is unique to Honda’s e:HEV systems.
These changes are said to yield 10% better fuel economy than before. They will have improved combustion efficiency, as well as better torque transmission and power conversion in hybrid mode. Honda is also looking to optimize the components of systems for the 1.5L and 2.0L, with an emphasis on maximizing efficiency through their downsizing, provided their production costs come down.
The upcoming 2025 Honda Prelude will be the first to receive the next-gen e:HEV systems. Honda also promises better driving dynamics with the updated Honda S+ Shift, which fine-tunes engine RPM during acceleration, deceleration, and gear changes. Next-gen e:HEVs will also come with electric all-wheel drive (E-AWD), which improves driving performance in low-traction conditions.
Other enhancements to Honda’s 2nd-gen e:HEVs comprise a 10% drop in vehicle weight, a reduction of 90kg in platform weight, modular body sizes for various models, and cost-down initiatives throughout. Promising to deliver more efficient, cost-effective, and fun-to-drive Honda hybrid vehicles, these advancements will take effect across our hybrid lineup starting in 2024.
