Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite vs. MediaTek Dimensity 9400: A Battle of Next-Gen Smartphone Processors

Qualcomm has recently introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, marking its latest flagship chipset for smartphones. The new processor is also the first from the company to take advantage of TSMC’s new 3nm architecture, offering up to 45% greater performance over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

The other major member of the 3nm club is the MediaTek Dimensity 9400, which comes in right behind the Snapdragon 8 Elite while including some bigger performance features of its own. They both go great with gaming, in terms of both performance and on-device AI capacity. Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite vs MediaTek Dimensity 9400

Design-wise, both chips use TSMC’s 3nm process and incorporate eight cores. While the Snapdragon 8 Elite has a 2x Prime Core + 6x Performance Cores setup, the Dimensity 9400 combines both Cortex-X925, Cortex-X4, and Cortex-A720 Cores. The Snapdragon 8 Elite with a top frequency of 4.32GHz, compared to 3.62GHz for the Dimensity 9400.

Using the Adreno 830 GPU for graphics processing, the Snapdragon 8 Elite is compatible with Unreal Engine 5.3 for real-time 3D rendering, in addition to improving ray tracing performance. The Immortalis G925 which comes with Dimensity 9400 for improved gaming and ray tracing performance contrasts this notion. But the Snapdragon 8 Elite does bring some extra AI capabilities too, as the Snapdragon 8 Elite uses the new Hexagon AI Engine that supports multimodal generative AI. The Dimensity 9400 is equipped with MediaTek NPU 890, supporting on-device AI features and video generation.

On the connectivity front, the Snapdragon 8 Elite comes with a Snapdragon X80 5G modem with maximum download and upload speeds of up to 10Gbps and 3.5Gbps, respectively, while the Dimensity 9400 has similar speeds through the built-in 3GPP Release-17 5G modem. Both support Wi-Fi 7 and NavIC. With both processors targeting high performance, smartphone makers have a showdown on their hands as they prepare devices for the coming year, especially when gaming and AI are up for grabs.
