Next-Gen Toyota Hilux and Fortuner to Feature New 2.0L Turbo Petrol Engine Delivering Up to 300 HP

With the auto industry at large in the process of transition to electrification, Toyota remains one of the few holdouts still fully committed to internal combustion engines (ICE) and hybrids. Nonetheless, with the pressure to reduce its carbon emissions, Toyota is improving the fuel efficiency and power of its turbo engines. This new engine will likely be available across the globe and is expected to first see duty in both the next Hilux and Fortuner.

Toyota Hilux and Fortuner to Come With New Engine

According to reports, along with the next-generation Hilux and Fortuner is a new 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine from Toyota’s recently developed engine family. It will also be used in the next round of Toyota sports cars, including the new MR2 and Celica. In the Hilux, it’s anticipated to make approximately 300 hp and 400 Nm from a 2.0-liter turbo petrol engine.

Other Toyota models will have a more powerful version, producing 400 hp and 549 Nm, with a competition-exclusive variant reaching 600 hp. It is unclear if the new mill will also be offered with the current Hilux and Fortuner or arrive with their next-generation versions due in 2025. The new engine should make its way when the current Fortuner enters the last stages of its lifecycle, a move that will help ensure it is seen as a new product.

It is also not clear at this point as to which all Fortuner variants will come powered by the new engine, however, our speculation says that the GR-Sport model could go on to replace the 204 hp 2.8-liter turbo diesel engine with the new 2.0 turbo petrol variant. This new engine is expected to be up to 30% more fuel-efficient, significantly reducing carbon emissions. While not as environmentally friendly as a battery electric vehicle (BEV), this efficiency improvement represents a considerable advancement.

It will also serve as a replacement for some of the automaker’s existing 2.4-liter turbo units and is said to be about 10% smaller yet deliver much more power. Toyota’s Asahi plant will produce the 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine and its turbo variant, which are expected to improve fuel efficiency by 30% compared to the current 2.5-liter naturally aspirated technology.

All three new four-cylinder inline engines. Toyota remains bullish on the advent of these new engines, calling them game changers. In addition, the engines will be able to run on petrol, diesel, and carbon-neutral choices like ethanol, synthetic fuels, and liquid hydrogen. Most of these units are slated for hybrid powertrains reaffirming the Japanese giant’s direction in this burgeoning market, which is a cooperative development with its other countrymen Subaru and Mazda.
