India’s Yogesh Kathuniya has won the silver medal in the discus throw F56 category at the Paris Paralympics 2024. His throw of 42.22 metres came up short against Brazil’s Claudiney Batista dos Santos, who won the gold with a Paralympic Record of 46.86m. On the other hand, Greece’s Konstantinos Tzounis won the bronze with a best throw of 41.32m.

Kathuniya had won silver in the Tokyo Paralympics of 2020 as well, and now follows it up with yet another second place finish.

The 27-year-old’s category featured throwers from a seated position, or in a wheelchair. As a result, all the power seemed to be generated by the torque of the upper body.

However, Kathuniya is seemingly not happy with his performance as he was confident of being able to beat Claudiney Batista dos Santos, who shattered the distance record earlier in the event.

“I keep getting silver and I must work harder,” Kathuniya said. “I am not happy to have silver again.

“I know the Brazilian (Claudiney Batista) is beatable. I can throw 48m, I do it all the time. I was doing it in the warm-up, so to lose to him today is hard.”
