This likely means that the enthusiast 600-series and high-end B850 and B840 chipsets have been delayed to early 2025. Historically, high-end chipsets from AMD get launched ahead of budget-friendly options this includes CPUs motherboards, and GPUs. Originally expected to introduce the budget 800 series chipsets in 2024, that has been delayed as well. AMD, instead is expanding the lineup with X870 and X870E chipsets this year for its Ryzen 9000 series CPUs.
AMD B850 & B840 Chipset To Delay
As per the ComputerBase, the B850 and B840 boards will debut in early 2025. The X870 and X870E, on the other hand, may make an appearance in September with any lucky date between those days being September 30th. AMD released the Zen 5-based Ryzen 9000 processors this month, and of course, all motherboard manufacturers are going to launch their X870/X870E chipset motherboards in September.
So while it’s not clear exactly why Intel is holding back launching its mainstream chipset, anyone operating with a budget will either have to grit their teeth and put up with the existing B650 or B660 chipsets — or wait for an 800-series. All things considered, the existing B600 motherboards would need a BIOS update to support these new Ryzen 9000 CPUs but you should be covered right out of the box with those upcoming 800 series boards. This could be to coincide with the launch of more mainstream CPUs coming next year.
The new X40 series chipset, which will only support PCI-E 3.0, and the B840 chipset, which is expected to succeed the Ax20 entry-level chipset, will also be introduced. The B850 chipset will succeed the B650 but it is unclear if there will be a B850E variant. Both the X870/X870E and B850 chipsets will support CPU overclocking, while the B840 will not.
The X870 and X870E chipsets will feature native PCI-E 5.0 support and are expected to compete with Intel’s Z790 chipsets, with the X870/E likely contending with Intel’s Z890 motherboards for Arrow Lake CPUs. The Z890 motherboards are set to launch on October 17th, shortly after the X870/X870E releases.
