The All New OneXGPU 2 eGPU
Previously, options included the flagship RX 7900M GPU for mobile platforms or the budget RX 7600 and 7700 GPUs. Expanding the lineup for Radeon users, on one hand at least OneXGPU 2 is sure to pick up this new chip called AMD RX7800M but it remains unclear if laptops with this GPU as they are still how will portable get these ray tracing-enabled GPUs.
The AMD Radeon RX 7800M was patched well before it was announced officially by the company, located at its first discovery. What OneXGPU touts as the “World’s First Graphics Card Dock Equipped with AMD Radeon RX 7800M”. The ONEXGPU 2 eGPU dock includes several connectivity options, such as USB 4.0, OCULINK, 2x DP, 1x HDMI, 2x USB, TF card slot, LAN port, and an M.2 slot for 2280 form-factor SSDs.
In terms of specs, the AMD RX 7800M features 60 RDNA 3 Compute Units or 3840 stream processors, making it comparable to the desktop RX 7800 XT variant. However, the mobile version is equipped with 12 GB GDDR6 memory on a 192-bit bus, compared to 16 GB GDDR6 on a 256-bit bus for the RX 7800 XT. It can support up to three displays and has a maximum TDP of 180W. The mobile version is expected to have slightly lower clock speeds and around 10% lower performance than the desktop chip.
OneXGPU also benchmarked the OneXGPU 2 in two games: God of War 4 and Red Dead Redemption 2. The video shows the external GPU running GOW 4 on Ultra settings at 2560x1600p with 60+ fps, while RDR 2 achieves 60 fps at 1920x1200p. The AMD RX 7800M “RDNA 3” GPU appears to be a powerful solution for gamers, though its availability for gaming laptops is still unconfirmed.
Meanwhile, the AMD Radeon RX 7900M, already available for high-end gaming laptops, hasn’t gained the same popularity as NVIDIA’s high-end GeForce RTX 40 series mobile GPUs. The OneXGPU 2 external GPU has not yet been officially launched for purchase, and pricing details remain undisclosed.
OneXGPU is known for its mini-PCs and handheld devices, and it recently introduced the M1 Mini PC, powered by Intel’s Meteor Lake processor. The M1 Mini PC can handle gaming with its Core Ultra 9 185H processor without needing a dedicated graphics card, and with the introduction of the OneXGPU 2, its performance can be significantly enhanced with an external GPU.
