AMD Acquires Silo AI for $665 Million to Strengthen its AI Strategy

AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Silo AI, Europe’s largest private AI lab, in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $665 million. This acquisition is a pivotal step in the Red Team’s strategy to deliver end-to-end AI solutions based on open standards and in strong collaboration with the global AI ecosystem.

AMD to Acquire Silo to Expand Enterprise AI Solutions Globally

A Strategic Move to Bolster AMD’s AI Capabilities

Silo AI, headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, brings a team of world-class AI scientists and engineers experienced in creating bespoke AI models, platforms, and solutions for leading enterprises. Their expertise spans cloud, embedded, and endpoint computing markets, making them a valuable addition to AMD’s portfolio. Silo AI’s CEO and co-founder, Peter Sarlin, will continue to lead the team under the AMD Artificial Intelligence Group, reporting to AMD’s senior vice president, Vamsi Boppana. The acquisition is expected to close in the second half of 2024.

“Across every industry, enterprises are looking for fast and effective ways to develop and deploy AI solutions for their unique business needs,” said Vamsi Boppana. “Silo AI’s team of trusted AI experts and proven experience will further accelerate our AI strategy and advance the rapid implementation of AI solutions for our global customers.”

Silo AI’s Expertise and Market Reach

Silo AI specializes in end-to-end AI-driven solutions, helping customers integrate AI seamlessly into their products, services, and operations. The company serves diverse markets, with clients including Allianz, Philips, Rolls-Royce, and Unilever. Additionally, Silo AI develops state-of-the-art open-source multilingual LLMs, such as Poro and Viking, on AMD platforms, complementing its SiloGen model platform.

“At Silo AI, our mission has always been to build an AI flagship company,” said Peter Sarlin. “Joining forces with AMD is the next logical step in shaping the future of AI computing. We look forward to scaling our impact and developing enterprise solutions that tackle the complexities of deploying AI at scale today.”

Industry Reactions and Future Prospects

Nishant Batra, Chief Strategy and Technology Officer at Nokia, commented on the acquisition, “As a leading European AI company, Silo AI has been a great long-term partner for us in many AI-related projects. We look forward to the enhanced capabilities the combination of AI technologies and innovative compute solutions from AMD will bring.”

Dr. Pekka Manninen, Director of Science and Technology at CSC-IT Center for Science, Finland, added, “Silo AI has been a pioneer in scaling large language model training on LUMI, Europe’s fastest supercomputer powered by over 12,000 AMD Instinct MI250X GPUs. Together, we have optimized the software layer for efficient AI model training on LUMI.”

Silo AI marks the latest in a series of acquisitions and investments by the Red team to support its AI strategy. Over the past 12 months, AMD has invested more than $125 million across a dozen AI companies and acquired Mipsology and Nod.ai to expand its AI ecosystem.

Mats Agervi, CEO of Combient, highlighted the significance of the acquisition, “Silo AI’s capabilities open up expanded opportunities for increased value creation in Europe and beyond. This acquisition underscores their strength in AI and positions AMD as a leader in AI-driven solutions.”
