Apple and Meta in Discussions Over AI Partnership for iOS 18

According to a new report, Apple has had discussions with Meta about incorporating the company’s AI model in iOS 18 as part of its Apple Intelligence initiative. Meta in July revealed its Llama 2 model, and Meta recently introduced a Llama 3. The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple, a long-time competitor with Meta, has discussed plans to perhaps provide Meta’s AI model in conjunction with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The talks, reported behind a paywall and still being negotiated with no final deal yet agreed upon, are a long way from becoming reality.

Apple’s Apple Intelligence initiative also opened a partnership with OpenAI so that the Siri adviser would be able to get to ChatGPT in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia which could improve reactions to specific praised experiences. ChatGPT will be an opt-in as well, meaning users who are more skeptical of the technology can choose to not include it while still taking advantage of Apple’s new AI powers.

Apple finally reached to end goal of making sure users got a choice selection of different AI models, as Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior VP of software engineering demonstrated during the WWDC 2024 event. Federighi had teased that Google Gemini might be allowed as an option later on, too.

Apple’s arrangement with OpenAI is said to be for a non-salaried partnership, and other discussions with AI firms also involve no payment, according to the report. Instead, the mutual benefit lies in the expansive potential user base: AI companies have the opportunity to market premium subscriptions through Apple Intelligence, while Apple stands to earn commissions from these transactions.

Nevertheless, the financial implications for AI companies over the long term remain uncertain. Supporting a substantial influx of users from Apple devices would likely necessitate significant computational resources and financial investment on the part of these companies.
