Apple Watch Series X: Thinner Design, Upgraded Display up to 49mm, and Shift to 3D-printed Components

According to an article by the famed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the new Apple Watch Series X is going to bring about some major updates. Of the expected changes, Kuo points to a more “aggressive” design and a 49mm size option, as opposed to the existing 45mm choice.

The Rumored Apple Watch Series X

Previously, reports and renders had suggested a serious slimming down of the Series X, perhaps slashing 10-15 percent off its thicker predecessors. Kuo’s predictions do little to defer from this assumption, adding that Apple wants the burst the thinner mold with the option of an even larger display size selection. Where previous Apple Watch models came in 41mm and 45mm sizes, the Apple Series X could see those swapped for 45mm and 49mm options, appealing to an even wider range of buyers.

In terms of design enhancements, Apple could make use of some innovations similar to its ‘Border Reduction Framework’ used in the latest iPhone models that could shrink the bezel sizes. This added bit of tech then, if implemented in the Series X, could help with the beauty and the function of the device.

Continuing, Kuo’s blog post considers the possible use of 3D printing in Series X and a follow-up reference to its typical viewport range. With this strategic pivot, the idea is to make production easier and also possibly lower manufacturing costs.

Kuo had previously noted that future Apple Watch models-potentially including an ‘Ultra’ edition could use 3D-printed mechanical components made by BLT. This would help grow the shipment volume of those components in the future, so it’s no surprise to see Apple trying to use such components en masse, as is apparently the case with the released devices.

While Apple gears up for the upcoming phone announcement – which occurs around September annually – the entire tech world is expecting to hear more about the Apple Watch Series X. That event does promise new features, new technology, and possibly even some broader hints about the future of Apple’s wearables as a whole.
