Director Girish AD has officially announced the sequel to the acclaimed Malayalam film “Premalu,” starring Naslen K Gafoor and Mamitha Baiju.
The sequel, which received acclaim in Kerala and beyond, will feature the lead actors reprising their roles. SS Karthikeya will once again present the Telugu version of the film.

“Premalu 2” has been officially announced by the production house, Bhavana Studios, as revealed on their Instagram account. They shared new posters hinting that the sequel will have a different setting from Hyderabad this time. The caption reads, “The Biggest RomCom blockbuster ever in Malayalam Cinema will be back in 2025! Let’s Premalu 2.” The poster features a starry sky backdrop with a palace silhouette. Additionally, Fahadh Faasil will return as one of the film’s producers.

SS Rajamouli’s son, Karthikeya, confirmed on X that he will return as the presenter for the Telugu version. He expressed gratitude to the Telugu audience for their support and excitement for presenting “Premalu 2” in Telugu, promising even more love and enthusiasm. “Premalu” follows the journey of Sachin (played by Naslen) and Reenu (played by Mamitha) as they navigate through adulthood, encompassing themes of love, friendship, and career. The storyline revolves around two Malayalis who relocate to Hyderabad for career opportunities, where they meet and eventually develop a romantic relationship. Sangeeth Prathap, portraying Amal Davis aka Amul Baby, Shyam Mohan as Aadhi, and Mathew Thomas as Thomas, also received praise for their performances alongside the lead actors.
The film concludes with Sachin embarking on further studies in the UK while Reenu remains in Hyderabad to pursue her career, with the couple resolving to maintain a long-distance relationship. As “Premalu 2” is announced for release in Malayalam, Telugu, and Tamil in 2025, audiences anticipate how the filmmakers will continue the storyline. Currently, a specific release date is yet to be disclosed.

For migrant Keralites nationwide, the film provided a relatable narrative, particularly through characters like Nivin Pauly’s Kuttan, who grapples with a longing for home while aspiring for a better life. Nazriya Nazim’s Kunju represented every woman striving for independence, regardless of her circumstances, while Dulquer Salmaan’s Aju embodied the carefree spirit many yearn to embrace.
Fast forward a decade later, in February of this year, Girish AD’s “Premalu,” starring Naslen K Gafoor and Mamitha Baiju, hit theaters and subsequently streamed on Disney+ Hotstar and Aha from April 12. Once again, a Malayalam film garnered attention for its relatability, humor, and overall feel-good vibe. More notably, it also explores the experience of migrant Keralites, this time in Hyderabad. It’s undeniable— “Premalu” is the contemporary equivalent of “Bangalore Days” for this generation.
“Premalu” shines because, much like “Bangalore Days,” it leaves audiences with a warm smile. Every character is relatable, with the dialogues leaving a lasting impression. Whether it’s Kuttan, Kunju, and Aju consoling each other through heartbreak while questioning the notion of ‘happily ever after,’ or Sachin’s comedic interactions with his friend Amal Baby, portrayed by Sangeeth Prathap, as he navigates his one-sided love for Reenu, these moments tug at the heartstrings.
While love, with all its awkwardness, drives the narrative for these characters, both “Premalu” and “Bangalore Days” excel in celebrating friendships. Sachin relies on the support of friends like Amul and Althaf Salim’s character, Shobhi sir. Even his inebriated college friends in Chennai offer him strength when he needs it most, such as when he musters the courage to confess his feelings for a classmate. Similarly, Kuttan, Kunju, and Aju, though cousins, share a bond that transcends family—they’re more like best friends. Aju’s concern for Kunju’s happiness outweighs societal expectations, demonstrated when he confronts her indifferent husband.
