Samsung Lists Next-Gen GDDR7 Memory for Upcoming GPUs: 28 Gbps & 32 Gbps Variants Unveiled

Samsung has started listing its first GDDR7 memory modules, which are designed to boost the upcoming next-generation GPUs expected to launch later this year.

Alongside SK Hynix and Micron, Samsung will provide its GDDR7 memory solutions to graphics card manufacturers like NVIDIA, AMD, and others. These modules boast pin speeds of up to 40 Gbps and densities of up to 64 GB, setting a benchmark in graphics memory technology.

The All New Samsung GDDR7 Memory

Samsung’s GDDR7 modules maintain a density of 16 GB allowing for 2 GB of VRAM per module to the capacities found in current-gen graphics cards. With a 32-bit bus interface and a refresh rate of 16K/32ms, these modules are packaged in the 266 FBGA format and come in two-speed options: the standard 32 Gbps die and the energy-efficient optimized 28 Gbps die.

The initial wave of GDDR7 GPUs is anticipated to use the 28 Gbps dies with premium versions incorporating the faster 32 Gbps pin speeds. Both speeds represent advancements over GDDR6 offering speed boosts of up to 24.5% and 42% respectively. Following Samsung’s unveiling of its GDDR7 memory modules at the GTC (Graphics Technology Conference) sampling has now begun:

• 512-bit / 28 Gbps / 32 GB (Max Memory) / 1792 GB/s (Max Bandwidth)
• 384-bit / 28 Gbps / 24 GB (Max Memory) / 1344 GB/s (Max Bandwidth)
• 256-bit / 28 Gbps / 16 GB (Max Memory) / 896.0 GB/s (Max Bandwidth)
• 192-bit / 28 Gbps / 12 GB (Max Memory) / 672.0 GB/s (Max Bandwidth)
• 128-bit / 28 Gbps / 8 GB (Max Memory) / 448.0 GB/s (Max Bandwidth)

Additionally, configurations with 32 Gbps speeds are as follows:

• 128-bit @ 32 Gbps: 512 GB/s (8 GB)
• 192-bit @ 32 Gbps: 768 GB/s (12 GB)
• 256-bit @ 32 Gbps: 1024 GB/s (16 GB)
• 320-bit @ 32 Gbps: 1280 GB/s (20 GB)
• 384-bit @ 32 Gbps: 1536 GB/s (24 GB)
• 512-bit @ 32 Gbps: 2048 GB/s (32 GB)

The upcoming release of the GDDR7 graphics cards this year signifies a major achievement, in the consumer graphics memory sector ushering in a fresh wave of creativity and progress.
