Mohun Bagan have ascended to the top of the ISL table, defeating East Bengal 3-1 in the Kolkata derby on March 10. They are now leading the race for the title on goal difference, thanks to another splendid performance from Dimi Petratos.Â
East Bengal thought things would go their way early on when they were given a penalty. But in a shocking turn of events, Cleiton Silva was denied from the spot by Vishal Kaith. The goalkeeper turned up time and time again to deny the number 10, who had several chances throughout the game.

Jason Cummings opened the scoring at the other end shortly after the penalty miss, helping his side establish the lead. Liston Colaco almost scored the same goal minutes later, doubling their lead. Petratos would score again, this time from the penalty spot, as the Mariners went into the break 3-0 up.Â
Saul Crespo salvaged some hope for the Red and Gold side, scoring a stunning goal after receiving it with his chest. But, he was subbed off in the 85th minute and in spite of positive performances from youngsters Vishnu and Sayan Banerjee, it wasn’t enough to change the scoreline.Â
The referees made some questionable decisions in the game too, booking Vishnu for diving in the box late in the game even though he was clearly kicked in the shins. A possible offside for Colaco was also not given as he scored from close range, doubling their lead.
As a result, their hopes of making it into the top six now look difficult unless they can somehow win their remaining four games of the season, with some luck from results elsewhere.
