Atletico Madrid have decided to extend Cesar Azpilicueta’s contract for one more season, with the defender’s deal now expiring at the end of the next season. He arrived for free after leaving Chelsea last summer, and has grown into an important player for Diego Simeone in his first season back in Spain.

There is an agreement in place between both parties for the extension, and it should be made official very soon. The player is currently injured after hurting his meniscus, and a timeline on his return has not been placed yet. He has made 22 appearances for the club this season.

Joining Chelsea in 2012 from French side Marseille, Azpilicueta quickly adapted to the rigors of English football. His tactical flexibility allowed him to excel across multiple defensive positions, be it as a right-back, left-back, or part of a central defensive trio, showcasing not just his defensive prowess but also his ability to contribute to the team’s offensive plays.

Throughout his tenure at Chelsea, Azpilicueta has made over 400 appearances, a testament to his consistency, fitness, and indispensability to the team. His leadership qualities on and off the pitch were recognized when he was named the captain, a role in which he has thrived, guiding the team through highs and lows. Under his captaincy, Chelsea secured the UEFA Champions League title in 2021, an achievement that crowned his contributions to the club.

Off the pitch, his professionalism and conduct have made him a role model. His legacy at Chelsea will undoubtedly be remembered for his dedication, leadership, and significant contributions to the club’s success in domestic and European competitions. And now, he is writing the final chapter of his career with the Rojiblancos.
