The Luis Suarez transfer saga has taken yet another twist. A latest news report has suggested that after the option of terminating his contract was agreed, the Barcelona president Bartomeu has blocked the transfer.
Suarez already had a clause in his contract which restricted him from moving to top clubs around the world, but it is believed that Atletico Madrid was not on that list. But now that the board has seen that there is a way to recover some funds from Suarez’s 1-year duration remaining on his contract, they plan to use that to full effect.
This development comes after the very reliable Fabrizio Romano had reported that Suarez was keen on a move to Atletico Madrid and had even agreed on a two-year contract with them.
The blocking of the transfer changes things for both Suarez and Atletico. For the former, options are now drying out and he may have to contemplate staying at Barcelona without much game time.
For Atletico, they may switch their focus to signing veteran striker Edinson Cavani on a free transfer, given the striker profiles more or less match the same. They are forced to sign a new striker because Juventus have convinced Alvaro Morata to join them on an initial loan with an obligation to buy.
Even the earlier touted move of Suarez to Juventus now seems like a dead-end, considering the latest update is that he has failed his Italian language required for his passport acquirement.
Another rumour early in the market was to make a return to his old club Ajax for a minimal fee, but even that seems to have reached a dead end. A slight chance of a return to Liverpool is also out of the question, now that Diego Jota has signed for the Reds.
So as it stands, the Uruguayan striker’s future remains bleak and is still unclear on where he will be plying his trade this season.
