iPhone 16 Pro to Receive Enhanced Ultra-Wide and Telephoto Cameras; iPhone 17 Set for Selfie Camera Upgrade

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF Securities International, Apple is set to enhance the camera setup for its upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, the anticipated Pro models scheduled for release later this year. Kuo asserts that Apple plans to upgrade the ultra-wide-angle camera on this year’s Pro models.

Additionally, the smaller iPhone 16 Pro is expected to feature the tetraprism telephoto camera setup already present in the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Kuo also predicts an improved selfie camera for the iPhone 17 series.

All About the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 17 Camera Rumors

In a Medium post, Kuo details that the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will transition from a 12-megapixel sensor to a 48-megapixel sensor, with the sensor outputting 12-megapixel images through pixel binning. According to Kuo, this hardware upgrade will result in enhanced image quality compared to the iPhone 15 Pro models.

Genius Electronic Optical, based in Taiwan, is identified by Kuo as a significant supplier of the ultra-wide angle lens on the iPhone 16 Pro models. The company is also expected to manufacture the tetraprism telephoto lens for the smaller iPhone 16 Pro model, aligning its optical zoom capabilities with the larger Pro model.

Apple’s previous release, the iPhone 15 Pro, featured an upgraded telephoto camera offering up to 5x optical zoom. Leaks suggest that the iPhone 16 Pro will maintain similar camera hardware, enabling comparable functionality. Kuo anticipates a larger 6.27-inch display for the iPhone 16 Pro, projecting a potential increase in user upgrades by 5 to 10 percent upon the phone’s release.

Furthermore, Kuo predicts that Apple will enhance the iPhone 17 series with an upgraded selfie camera, transitioning from a 12-megapixel sensor with a 5P lens to a 24-megapixel camera with a 6P lens. This improvement is expected to significantly enhance image quality. As the primary supplier for the iPhone’s front cameras, Genius Electronic Optical is predicted to experience a substantial rise in revenue, given the higher cost of 6P lenses, which is 100 percent to 120 percent greater than 5P lenses.
