The people at Counterpoint Research has done a great job to bring a new report that states a complete report on the mobile SoC market in Q2 2020. Never been this market been so much important than now when smartphones have become the integral part of our life.
For the last decade there have been various chip makers in the smartphone market and the US chip giant Qualcomm has been the leader in this segment for quite sometime now. But as the market is evolving, brands like MediaTek, HiSilicon have been on a rise while Apple and Samsung tries to gain more share.
As per Q2 2020, the Qualcomm’s chip market share was 29%, down from last year’s 33%, followed by MediaTek with 26% who is enjoying the growth from last year’s 24%. As the mid-range smartphone market has been rising steadily, MediaTek is on the rise as well with its Dimensity chips, its making 5G much more affordable.
Qualcomm has always targeted the upper mid-range and flagship smartphones, while MediaTek focusses on entry level and budget smartphones. With their new Dimensity and G-series of SoCs, MediaTek has totally changed the scenario and made low-priced smartphones a lot more usable than before.
So, naturally, people now prefer mid-range devices more and this is evident with MediaTek’s rise in the American, Europe, and the Middle East region:
Not only MediaTek, but also, Huawei’s HiSilicon has surpassed Samsung, now, ranking third with a total market share of 16% which is a rise from last year’s 12%. However, with the US-trade ban it cannot make chips anymore from TSMC, so the next quarter will not be that much great.
This is why Qualcomm and MediaTek want to win Huawei’s orders to increase their market share. Never been Qualcomm this much interested in Huawei and it knows if the Chinese smartphone giant goes with MediaTek, it can lose its crown and it seems most likely this time.
The next 5G based chip battle will be even more exciting as Apple has already introduced ‘not-so-convincing’ A14 Bionic while Snapdragon 875 is on the cards for Qualcomm as well. On the other hand, Samsung wants to amaze with its upcoming Exynos 1000 SoC while MediaTek won’t stop making new Dimensity chips as well.
