Igor Stimac has been hit with an injury crisis ahead of India’s AFC Asian Cup 2023 squad selection. The defensive midfield options have been diminishing for the head coach, as Glan Martins, Jeakson Singh and Rohit Kumar are all ruled out.Â
Anwar Ali has been sidelined with a long-term injury as well, while Ashique Kuruniyan is also expected to miss the continental tournament. KP Rahul’s medical report will determine whether he makes the final squad, but the major factor is whether Sahal Abdul Samad makes the cut. The Mohun Bagan SG midfielder has not played a game since December 6 because of an ankle injury, and could miss the opening game. But, the medical team is positive that he will be able to play the second or third fixture.
India AFC Asian Cup 2023 squad dilemma: Defensive midfield injury crisisÂ
Vibin Mohanan was also an option for Igor Stimac, but the Kerala Blasters youngster has been ruled out with an injury too. This leaves Deepak Tangri as one of the top contenders to join the rest of the midfield in Qatar.Â
While there is a headache in the defensive midfield, there are several other options that Igor Stimac could work out. With Anirudh Thapa and Apuia almost certain to make it into the squad, the question is who joins them to make it a more physically competent trio.
On the other hand, there is an abundance of attacking options to be chosen, with a number of attackers picking up form ahead of selection, including Mohun Bagan SG’s Kiyan Nassiri, who could finally make the step up to the national team.
