Almost seven years after Oscar’s shocking move from Chelsea to Shanghai Port FC in China, fans are still left wondering how things could have turned out had the midfielder stayed at Stamford Bridge. He made the move for £60 million aged 25, just when he was entering his prime, after being snubbed from the first team.

The Brazilian had won the Premier League and Europa League with Chelsea, scoring 61 goals and providing a crazy 110 assists in 203 games since 2012. After being snubbed from the starting line-up, he moved to Shanghai for more game time and to get wages that would be unparalleled elsewhere.

Oscar would be joined by Carlos Tevez, Hulk, Axel Witsel, Javier Mascherano, Yannick Carrasco and Alexandre Pato in the Chinese league. But, his earnings have been on another level.

The midfielder renewed his contract with the Chinese club in 2019, right before the restrictions limited the maximum salary for foreign players to £2.7 million per season. His deal, which runs until 2024, allows him to earn £20.8m a year.

And in the process, he has won two league titles with Shanghai Port – the most recent of which was last season. Now aged 32, Oscar could be on the move next year when his deal runs out with Shanghai.

A return to Chelsea has been rumoured for Oscar, but owing to their stacked options in midfield and young project, it seems unlikely that he would fit in there.
