AMD Inaugurates Bengaluru Design Center, Home to 3,000 Engineers

AMD inaugurated its largest global design center in Bengaluru on Tuesday, covering an expansive 5 lakh square feet and accommodating 3,000 engineers for the chipmaking company. The focus of these engineers will be on the design and development of semiconductor technology, with emphasis on areas such as 3D stacking, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and more.

All About the AMD’s Design Center

Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister for Communications, Electronics and IT, and Railways, formally opened the design center in the presence of senior officials, including Mark Papermaster (Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer), David Wang (Senior Vice President of GPU Technologies and Engineering), Brian Amick (Senior Vice President of Central Engineering), and Andrej Zdravkovic (Chief Software Officer and Senior Vice President of GPU Technologies), along with AMD India leadership.

Part of $400 million investment in India over the next five years, the AMD Technostar campus is designed to be a center of excellence for developing leading-edge products. This includes a focus on high-performance CPUs for data centers and PCs, data center and gaming GPUs, as well as adaptive SoCs (System-on-Chip) and FPGAs (Field-Programmable Gate Arrays) for embedded devices.

The inauguration aligns with India’s semiconductor program, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing support for the semiconductor design and talent ecosystem. Ashwini Vaishnaw stated, “AMD setting up its largest design center in Bengaluru is a testament to the confidence global companies have in India.”

Mark Papermaster expressed company’s confidence in India’s exceptional engineering talent, highlighting the significance of the investment in strengthening their relationship with the country. Jaya Jagadish, company’s India Country Head, emphasized the growth of the India Design Centre since its modest beginning in 2004, noting that a quarter of AMD’s global workforce is now located in India, actively contributing to the development of AMD’s flagship products for data centers, gaming, PCs, and embedded applications.
