Fabio Grosso injured as Marseille vs Lyon called off after heinous attacks

Lyon head coach Fabio Grosso and assistant head coach Raffaele Longo have been seriously injured by attacks prior to their game against Marseille. The match has been called off owing to the mental state of the players after the attack, and the serious condition of both coaches in the build-up to the match.

Individuals pelted stones and unidentified projectiles at the six Lyon buses, one of which broke through the glass and the shattered shards caught Grosso in the face.

The Ligue 1 carried out an emergency meeting and decided to call the fixture off considering all the factors. Lyon acknowledged and detailed the events in an official statement, and called upon the authorities to take stock of the repetitive tragedies in games against Marseille.

Marseille released their own statement, condemning the violent behaviour of the perpetrators and wishing Fabio Grosso well.

Grosso was hired in September by Lyon after they sacked Laurent Blanc for the disappointing start to the season. They are the only club still winless in Ligue 1, and have been heavily criticised by their fans. On the other hand, Gennaro Gattuso replaced Marcelino and has also been unable to turn things around either.

Marseille have had a history of violent behaviour in matches, such as storming a training ground and setting a fire alongside seriously injuring an Eintracht Frankfurt supporter with a flare.
