Adreno 750 GPU in Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to have less frequency

According to previously leaked test results, the Adreno 750 GPU that will be included in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will be up to 80% faster than the Adreno 740 present in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 of the current generation. Unfortunately, that performance difference may narrow slightly compared to commercial units, as a recent rumor suggests Qualcomm may downclock the Adreno 750 in order to reach a new level of power efficiency.

The Adreno 750 chip within the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 was rumored to run at a frequency of 903MHz in the past

Sadly, the clock speed would be dropped to 770MHz courtesy to @faridofanani96, who noticed a Weibo post from a tipster going by the name of “Feiwei.” The brief document doesn’t go into great detail as to why Qualcomm would forego the performance of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, although it likely have something to do with meeting a particular power-efficiency goal.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is not mass produced on TSMC’s 3nm or N3B processes, thus Qualcomm probably only has a small amount of power headroom before the Adreno 750’s benefits start to wane. With only a slight performance penalty, it’s possible that lowering the clock speed from 903MHz to 770MHz resulted in the largest improvements in thermals and battery life.

Although it is currently unknown whether smartphone makers would have access to the Adreno 750 overlocking feature, gaming handset manufacturers like ASUS should have this freedom. Sadly, the enormous performance improvements that we seen in leaked benchmarks might no longer be present, with even the A17 Pro’s 6-core GPU potentially outperforming them.
