On October 19, Google unveiled its intention to commence the manufacturing of Pixel smartphones in India. The tech giant will initiate the production of the Pixel 8 model in India, with the first units expected to be available in 2024.

This follows the recent launch of the Pixel 8 in India and global markets, alongside the more high-end Pixel 8 Pro. The device is equipped with Google’s custom Tensor G3 chip and a Titan M2 security chip, featuring a dual rear camera setup and boasting a remarkable battery life of up to 72 hours when using the Extreme Battery Saver mode.

The Manufacturing Begins with Pixel 8

During the Google for India 2023 event, held seven years after Google introduced its first Pixel smartphone, the company disclosed its plans to manufacture smartphones within India. The initial step will involve assembling the Pixel 8 within the country, with Google collaborating with both local and international manufacturers.

The production of the Pixel 8, and presumably subsequent Pixel smartphones from Google, is slated to commence in 2024. Consumers can anticipate seeing Pixel 8 units manufactured in India by the following year.

This announcement positions Google as the latest smartphone brand to initiate smartphone manufacturing operations in India, a move already undertaken by competitors like Samsung and Apple, which also assemble some of their smartphones within the country. Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether this local production will lead to reduced pricing for Google’s Pixel devices.

Simultaneously, Google disclosed its plans to extend its service network to more cities and regions across India. Currently, the company operates 28 service centers in 27 cities, managed by F1 Info Solutions. Senior VP for Devices and Services, Rick Osterloh, expressed, “This is an initial step in a long journey to expand our device production capacity and cater to the increasing demand for Pixel smartphones in the country.”
