The Kia Seltos has generally ranked second in the compact SUV segment, trailing only the Hyundai Creta; however, recent arrivals such as the Maruti Grand Vitara have periodically surpassed it. The Sonet, on the other hand, confronts stiff competition from new rivals like as the Maruti Fronx and the Hyundai Exter, and fell to ninth position among the best-selling subcompact SUVs in September. The prospective reintroduction of diesel manual gearboxes could help the industry reclaim lost ground.

The Kia Seltos and Kia Sonet both has the same 1.5-liter CRDi VGT diesel engine

Transmission options for these cars include the 6iMT and 6AT. It’s worth noting that the petrol engine options for the Kia Seltos and Sonet differ. The 1.5-liter NA petrol engine in the Kia Seltos produces 115 PS and 144 Nm. This engine is available with either a 6-speed manual transmission or an IVT.

The turbo petrol engine, on the other hand, produces a remarkable 160 PS and 253 Nm, with transmission options of 6iMT or 7DCT (7-speed dual-clutch transmission). The Sonet comes with a 1.2-liter NA petrol engine that produces 83 PS and 115 Nm and is connected to a 5-speed manual transmission. For those looking for additional power, the 1.0-liter turbo engine provides 120 PS and 172 Nm, with gearbox options including 6iMT and 7DCT.

The return of diesel manual transmission options for the Kia Seltos and Sonet heralds a revival of classic driving experiences. While new technologies such as the iMT have their advantages, the return of manual gearboxes provides a nostalgic touch for driving lovers. Kia’s return seeks to provide more options for consumers who value the hands-on control and engagement that manual gearboxes bring.
