Indian knowledge workers are the happiest at work compared to their global counterparts according to the HP Work Relationship Index, a comprehensive study that explores employees’ relationships with work around the world. The study surveyed over 15,600 respondents including knowledge workers, IT decision-makers, and business leaders in 12 countries, with a sample size of over 1300 respondents from India. The findings reveal that 50% of Indian knowledge workers exhibit a sense of workplace contentment against only 27% of the global workforce reporting a healthy relationship with work.

Indians emerge as the world’s happiest workforce: HP Work Relationship Index – Over 90% are willing to take a salary cut for better work relationships in India

Gurpreet Singh Brar, Vice President, HP India market “We’re seeing a major change in what matters most to India’s workforce. They’re seeking job satisfaction through flexibility, mental well-being, effective leadership, and the right tools. Business leaders can leverage this shift by promoting emotionally intelligent leadership, crafting workplaces that align with these desires, and offering the necessary tools and technology to meet their evolving demands.”

The HP Work Relationship Index survey identified six primary factors that contribute to a successful work relationship: satisfaction, effective leadership, and a focus on people, skills, tools, and workspace. In the case of India, it demonstrates particular strength in the areas of satisfaction and skills.

India’s developing labour force is open to exchanging their salary for greater job satisfaction.

In India, there has been a significant shift in the dynamics of work connections. A substantial 78% of individuals knowledgeable in their field have observed heightened demands in terms of their work associations over the past 2-3 years. There is a strong inclination towards self-improvement, with a majority of individuals willing to accept lower salaries in exchange for a more fulfilling workplace environment.

Asserting the Need for Input in Equipment and Work Environment for Optimal Hybrid Work Performance

In the age of hybrid work, the tools and work environment have a significant impact on empowering and inspiring employees. It is crucial to consider their opinions not just when selecting technology, but also during its implementation. A staggering 84% of knowledgeable individuals in India believe that technology should be chosen based on their specific needs. Additionally, 75% of them consider the ability to choose their work location as an important factor. Regrettably, only 2 out of 5 knowledge workers have confidence in their company’s ability to provide them with the appropriate tools to facilitate hybrid work.

Business leaders face challenges in effectively delivering emotional communication

In the realm of Indian knowledge workers, a vast majority of 80% acknowledge the significance of promoting transparent emotional communication in the workplace. Interestingly, an impressive 9 out of 10 individuals would readily accept a lower-paying position if it meant collaborating with emotionally intelligent leaders. This sentiment is shared by business leaders as well, with 76% emphasizing the importance of emotional intelligence for successful leadership, and an overwhelming 90% emphasizing the value of displaying empathy. However, there is a noticeable disparity. Almost half (47%) of knowledge workers feel that their company’s leaders are falling short of meeting their emotional needs and expectations.
