Mason Greenwood made his first appearance for Getafe in their 3-2 win over Osasuna. The Englishman came on for the final 13 minutes of the game, making his first appearance on the pitch for an official game in 19 months since he was suspended by Manchester United.

He joined Getafe on deadline day on a loan deal with no buy option. This decision was made after a lengthy internal investigation at Manchester United. Although the officials had cleared his return, the intense fan and media backlash forced them to loan the player out in an active attempt to help him rebuild his career.

The forward came out to a hostile environment, with the travelling Osasuna fans chanting, “Mason Greenwood, die” after he came off the bench for his debut. There was a significant amount of backlash when he made his move to Getafe as well, with Spanish domestic abuse organisation Ana Bella criticising them for their transfer activity.

Getafe head coach Jose Bordalas was eager to dismiss the points regarding the chants made by the away fans. He instead focused on Greenwood’s performance on the pitch and said that the move was good for him and for the club. Bordalas also mentioned that the player would continue to feature for the club for the remainder of the season.

The match official heard the chant and a disciplinary investigation has now been launched into the matter.
