ASUS has released three new Z790 motherboards, including the flagship ROG Maximus Z790 DARK HERO, which supports Intel 14th Gen CPUs. ASUS ROG revealed three new motherboards at Gamescom 2023 that are built for the future Intel 14th Gen CPUs, with upgraded designs and new capabilities. The trio includes the ROG Maximus Z790 DARK HERO, a flagship ROG Maximus motherboard, as well as the ROG STRIX Z790 A Gaming WIFI II and the TUF Gaming Z790-PRO WIFI.
The ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 DARK HERO is a flagship motherboard equipped with a robust 20+1 phase power delivery system. Here are its key features:
- Compatibility: It supports Intel LGA 1700 socket, making it ready for Intel Core Next-Gen & 13th Gen processors, Intel Core 12th Gen, Pentium Gold, and Celeron Processors.
- Powerful Power Solution: This motherboard boasts a 20+1 teamed power solution, capable of delivering 90A per stage. It includes dual ProCool II power connectors, high-quality alloy chokes, and durable capacitors to efficiently handle multi-core processors.
- Effective VRM Cooling: The motherboard features substantial heatsinks integrated with the I/O cover. These heatsinks are connected by an L-shaped heatpipe and coupled with high-conductivity thermal pads to optimize VRM thermals.
- Advanced M.2 Support: It offers an onboard PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot and four PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots, all equipped with robust cooling solutions.
- Extensive Connectivity: The motherboard features dual Thunderbolt 4 USB Type-C ports, a USB 20Gbps Type-C front-panel connector with Quick Charge 4+ (up to 60W), USB Wattage Watcher, six additional USB 10Gbps ports, two PCIe 5.0 x16 SafeSlots, and HDMI 2.1 support.

All three ASUS Z790 motherboards include REMP II, AI Cooling II, and AI Overclocking features that allow for the quickest CPU and DDR5 memory overclocking while keeping things cool and in check with the AI Cooling II feature set. The TUF Gaming Z790-PRO WIFI is also the first board in the range to offer AI overclocking, which was not available on previous-generation TUF motherboards.
Onboard PCIe Gen5 M.2 slots, Thunderbolt 4 USB Type-C connections with up to 40 Gbps transfer speeds, front-panel USB 20 Gbps Type-C ports, PCIe Slot Q-Release, M.2 Q-Latch, Q-LED, and Q-Antennas are among the additional features for the new ASUS Z790 motherboards. The motherboards will also enable WIFI 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 solutions, which will be powered by Intel Gale Peak 2 “BE200” and Killer 1750X discrete solutions.
In terms of design, all three ASUS Z790 motherboards have an ATX form factor, with the ROG and TUF Gaming variants sporting a distinct black colour scheme and the ROG STRIX sporting a two-tone white/black colour scheme. The ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 DARK HERO also has a large “ROG” logo on the I/O plate with ARGB illumination.
