David Silva has officially announced his retirement from football at the age of 37. The iconic midfielder sustained a serious ACL injury in preseason training with Real Sociedad which caused him to take the decision at a rather premature stage.

The player announced his decision to hang up his boots on his official social media pages in a video. The Spaniard is mostly fondly remembered for his time with Manchester City, for whom he played between 2010 and 2020. He played for Real Sociedad for two seasons after that, and has now decided to move on from professional football as a whole.

With Manchester City, Silva won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and five League Cups, as well as the 2011-12 PFA Players’ Player of the Year award. He was also named in the PFA Team of the Year three times.

He established himself as one of the best midfielders to have ever played in the Premier League, with his ability to score as well as create chances for his teammates. In 869 matches throughout his career, he scored 156 goals and provided 226 assists. He also won the World Cup and Euros with the Spanish national team, completing football as a whole.

The only trophy that eluded David Silva throughout his remarkable playing career was the Champions League title. But even without it, he has had a legendary career as one of City’s and Spain’s best ever players.
