Micron is discussing its Investment plan in India ahead of Semicon India 2023

Sanjay Mehrotra, President and CEO of Micron Technologies, met with Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal ahead of Semicon India 2023. The two talked about Micron’s $2.75 billion assembly and testing facilities that would be built here. The two also talked about India’s expanding semiconductor ecosystem and the prospects it will provide.

In a significant boost to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aim of making India a semiconductor powerhouse, US-memory chip maker Micron has chosen to establish a new semiconductor assembly and testing plant in India. The announcement came during Prime Minister Modi’s state visit to the United States, where he met with key players in the semiconductor industry, including Mehrotra. He invited the latter to help India develop its chip production. Micron will establish a new production site in Gujarat to meet domestic and international demand for DRAM and NAND products.

Micron expects phased building of the new assembly and testing facility in Gujarat to begin in 2023.

Phase 1 will begin operations in late 2024, with 500,000 square feet of planned cleanroom space, and Micron will steadily increase capacity over time in line with global demand trends. Micron anticipates that Phase 2 of the project, which would include the construction of a facility on a similar scale to Phase 1, will begin in the second part of the decade.

Over the next several years, the business will invest up to $825 million in the project’s two phases, creating up to 5,000 new direct Micron employees and 15,000 community jobs. The semiconductor company will receive 50% fiscal support for the whole project cost from the central government as part of the government’s “Modified Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) Scheme,” as well as incentives totaling 20% of the total project cost from Gujarat. Micron and the two government bodies will contribute up to $2.75 billion over the length of both stages.

According to the corporation, government backing would help fund the project and provide access to critical semiconductor infrastructure and resources to foster innovation and enhance local talent development. The new Micron plant will specialise in converting wafers into ball grid array (BGA) integrated circuit packages, memory modules, and solid-state drives.

It will construct and run the assembly and testing plant in compliance with the company’s sustainability goals and environmental commitments on a local and global scale. Furthermore, the facility will employ innovative water-saving technology to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge. Mehrotra is in India to speak at the second Semicon India, which will be held in Gandhinagar from July 28 to 30, 2023. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to kick off the event.
