Bayern Munich have won the Bundesliga title for the 11th straight time, picking up a hard-fought win against Koln in their final game while Borussia Dortmund stumbled to a draw at home against Mainz. Both finished on 71 points, but Bayern won the league on goal difference.

The defending champions were in second place heading into the final matchday, and the title was out of their hands. But, Dortmund’s inability to get the job done against Mainz handed the title to them in spite of performances not being up to their usual standards.

Mainz produced a nightmare for the Dortmund fans packed at the Westfalenstadion, with two goals conceded in the first 25 minutes. To make things worse, Sebastian Haller missed a 19th minute penalty, tossing up a golden opportunity to find their way back into the game. And in hindsight, had he scored, it would have won them the title.

They were able to fight back in the second half, and equalised courtesy of Niklas Sule, late in the game. But it wasn’t enough to get them ahead of their title rivals.

Bayern went ahead early courtesy of Kingsley Coman. But, their lead was neutralised through a penalty converted by Dejan Ljubicic. Had the game ended level, Dortmund would have won the league. However, Jamal Musiala scored in the 89th minute to maintain Bayern Munich’s streak of winning the shield while thousands of hearts were broken in Dortmund.
