Liverpool are close to appointing Jorg Schmadtke as their new sporting director. Formerly at Wolfsburg, he has accepted the role and a final agreement is very close. He is expected to join them ahead of the summer transfer window to help them with their recruitment.
Julian Ward is expected to leave his position at Anfield in the coming month, and Schmadtke has been identified as his replacement. He was formerly a goalkeeper, and is a well-respected figure in German football. Together with Jurgen Klopp, he will help rebuild the team’s midfield and oversee their business.

Michael Edwards was the sporting director before Ward took over, and was responsible for the success that Klopp has had with the team over the last few seasons. Since his departure, things have taken a turn for the worse, with the Reds having to ensure a trophyless 22/23 season.
They are also locked in a tight race for the top four, and could miss out on Champions League football this summer. If that happens, it would further complicate their ability to lure new talent alongside their finances.
Jorg Schmadtke has earned a reputation as an outspoken man behind the scenes, often not the easiest to get along with. But, his track record of boosting team’s performances is undeniable, helping Wolfsburg to Champions League places after years of underachievement shortly after joining them.
Fans will be hopeful that he has a similar impact when he joins Liverpool, who have struggled this season and have a very important summer transfer window coming up.
