The type of displays used by Apple in its products has always been a reflection of the company’s long-standing investment in display technology. Mini-LED displays have been the main topic of discussion in recent years. These have been added by Apple to its dedicated displays, MacBooks, and iPads. Apple, however, appears to be considering abandoning OLED soon.
OLED displays are already standard on iPhones, and a recent Omdia report, as reported by OLED Info, suggests that Apple intends to switch all of its displays over to OLED by 2027.
Apple is also considering two new displays in 32- and 47-inch sizes.
The most recent update gave a release date of 2024 for the rumoured OLED iPad Pro upgrade. But it seems like that update marked the start of a significant change for the business. The company introduced OLED screens with the iPhone X in 2017, and it appears the company plans to make a complete transition to OLED by 2027, ten years from that date.
According to Omdia, the increase in OLED shipments from 9.7 million in 2022 to 70 million in 2028 will be driven by Apple’s switch. According to its predictions, the MacBook Pro will adopt OLED technology after the iPad Pro, with new “iMac monitors” following.
According to the report, the iPhone maker’s decision to use OLED displays is the primary driver of Omdia’s predictions. The companywill start using OLEDs in its iPad Pro devices early next year, and in laptops (the MacBook Pro initially) starting in 2026. For its 32″ and 42″ iMac monitors starting in 2027, the company will also begin using QD-OLED and/or WOLED displays. By 2026, the company will almost entirely stop using our LCDs and miniLEDs in its mobile devices.
