Google Pixel 8 to get a downsized display than its Pro variant

According to a renowned display analyst, the Google Pixel 8 will receive some dimensional changes when it launches later this year, as Google reportedly attempts to make the differences between the non-Pro and Google Pixel 8 Pro more ‘visible’ to customers. Ross Young, the founder and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, commented on the Pixel 8 display size, stating that it will be 6.16 inches diagonally.

According to the analyst, the Pixel 7 had a 6.32-inch panel, so Google is actually shrinking the physical size. There could be a variety of reasons for Google’s decision, which we will discuss shortly, but it is worth noting that the Google Pixel 8 Pro display will remain unchanged from the Pixel 7 Pro at 6.7 inches.

Both displays are expected to be manufactured by Samsung, and Google is likely to save money on components by selecting a lower-quality panel than Apple has chosen for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. This isn’t a bad decision because most customers can’t tell the difference between the two displays, and Google also gets a chance to lower the prices of its upcoming flagships, making them more appealing to a wider audience, even in this economy.

The reason Google chose to reduce the Pixel 8’s display size could be to differentiate it from the Google Pixel 8 Pro.

Last year, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro had a smaller dimensional difference, implying that people who held both devices at the same time did not notice a significant difference. Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro now have the same panel size as the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, which customers with smaller hands will appreciate.

Unfortunately, reducing the Google Pixel 8 display size means that it will be compromised in other areas, such as screen real estate and, of course, battery life, unless Google decides to make both smartphones thicker. Young has stated that both displays will go into production in May, so we may learn more about their specifications at that time.
