The Taiwanese semiconductor company adds another power Dimensity chip with 5G support to its portfolio. This kind of chip is target towards mid-range devices that need 5G support without comprising on performance.
We had leaks regarding the upcoming Qualcomm and MediaTek chips, it seems to be true with the launch of the new MediaTek Dimensity 720. As the mid-range smartphone segment is getting heated up with the launch of OnePlus Nord, MediaTek doesn’t want to leave space to Qualcomm.
Much expectedly, the new Dimensity 720 5G SoC is also based out of TSMC’s 7nm process and if you compare the new chip with the new Dimensity 820 5G SoC, you’ll notice a similar configuration but with lower clock speeds. The new SoC also incorporates an octa-core design with two ARM Cortex-A76 cores that are clocked at up to 2.0GHz while the rest six are ARM Cortex-A55 cores which are also clocked at up to 2.0GHz.
On the GPU front, there’s the ARM Mali-G57 MC3 GPU which is also quite similar to what we find on the Dimensity 800 chipset. The SoC can listen for multiple trigger words to wake up virtual assistants such as Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, or other localized services.
The Dimensity 720 can support Full-HD+ (2520 x 1080) resolution displays with a 90Hz refresh rate and 21:9 aspect ratio. The chip can be paired with a maximum of 12GB of 2133MHz LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 2.2 storage. On the camera front, it can support up to a single 64MP camera or dual cameras up to 20+16MP and has a framework for multiple cameras such as macro, ultra-wide, or telescopic.
Coming to 5G, the SoC has an integrated 5G modem that supports both SA/ NSA sub-6GHz networks with download speeds up to 2.35Gbps. It has useful features like MediaTek’s 5G UltraSave which gives extensive power optimization and Dynamic BWP.
The Dimensity 720 chip lets you capture 4K (H.264/265) videos @ 30 FPS and among other connectivity options, you have Bluetooth 5.1, WiFi 5, and NavIC support for Indian users. It also offers the latest tech like Dynamic Spectrum Sharing, both FDD/TDD modes, and includes full 2G-5G connectivity coverage for any situation.
This new 5G SoC can take on the recently announced Snapdragon 690 5G SoC, which is also expected to debut on the upcoming mid-ranged 5G smartphones. So, this Dimensity 720 can also be seen in action soon, helping to make 5G much more affordable to masses.
