Netflix Ad-Supported plan arrives on Apple TV

Apple TV was one of the devices the Netflix ad-supported plan didn’t support when it was first introduced four months ago. The less expensive tier is now accessible in the Netflix tvOS app as of this week.

Yesterday, the update was discovered by a Reddit user going by the name websgeisti. The user mentioned that the most recent version (2.3.0) of the Netflix app for Apple TV offers the Basic with Ads plan from Netflix.

Apple TV users were previously unable to access the ads tier and were instead advised to upgrade to one of Netflix’s more expensive plans or try on a different device.

On Chromecast, Chromecast Ultra, PlayStation 3, and the Netflix app for Windows, the tier is still not accessible.

Netflix previously expressed how pleased it was with the success of its new tier, despite the delay in adding the supported devices and other drawbacks like fewer titles. Jeremi Gorman, the president of worldwide advertising for Netflix, stated at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that the platform has a “broad swath” of advertisers.

However, a month after it went live, analytics company Antenna found that only 9% of new Netflix subscribers in the US chose the less expensive package.

In November 2022, Netflix began offering its $6.99/month ad-supported plan to customers in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Australia, Japan, Korea, Brazil, Canada, and Mexico. There are typically four to five minutes of advertisements per hour, and they last between 15 and 30 seconds.

Subscribers to the Basic with Ads plan can only stream from one device at once, and the video quality is only 720p HD. Due to licencing limitations, 5% to 10% of Netflix’s content library is inaccessible. In addition, subscribers who choose the ad-supported plan are not able to view content offline.
