Barcelona youngster Gavi has officially lost the number 6 shirt, and will be forced to go back to the number 30 that he previously wore. The new kit number was part of the new contract that was agreed by him during the January transfer window.
However, La Liga have blocked his registration owing to financial fair play, and as a result, he won’t be wearing the new number until he can be registered. Gavi isn’t the only player that is facing issues about his new contract being registered. Ronald Araujo is also in a similar situation, with the club unable to register his new deal.
Gavi to return to number 30 until the end of the season
Not only is the situation very messy for Barcelona, but it also poses a risk of the player leaving. Although he is committed to the project, the former €50 million clause is still valid in his old contract. Barcelona placed a €1 billion release clause in his new deal, but it won’t be active due to it not being registered.
However, any interested club will have to convince him to leave his boyhood club to sign him – which certainly won’t be an easy task.
With Barcelona being ordered to reduce their expenses by €200 million in the summer, it won’t be any easy task to register new contracts. Moreover, talk of new players arriving such as Inigo Martinez, Ilkay Gundogan, Vitor Roque and Lionel Messi will have to wait until they can sort out another financial mess.
