Most successful country in international football – Top 5 teams with the most trophies

Brazil is the most successful country when it comes to World Cup history. But what about all of football history?

The Selecao have earned a reputation as one of the best footballing countries on the globe. And right now, they also rank #1 on the FIFA World rankings. But, they aren’t the most successful country when it comes to silverware.

Which is the most successful country in international football – The top 5 revealed

5. Germany and France – 8 trophies

Germany and France are the only two European countries to feature on the list, and both of them have won eight trophies each. Germany have won four World Cups and three Euros while France have two World Cup trophies, and two Euros.

4. Mexico – 12 trophies

El Tri have won 11 Gold Cups, in addition to one Confederations Cup. But, they haven’t been able to advance to the deep stages of the World Cup in almost any edition.

3. Brazil – 18 trophies

Surprisingly, Brazil are not the most successful country in international football anymore. They have won five World Cup trophies, and nine Copa America trophies in addition to four Confederations Cup titles. But, they have been surpassed by their South American rivals.

2. Uruguay – 19 trophies

Probably a name you weren’t expecting at #2, but Uruguay were the inaugural World Cup winners. They also have the joint-most Copa America titles, at 15. Uruguay have also won two Olympics Gold Medals to take their tally to 19.

1. Argentina – 21 trophies

In the last year and a half, Argentina won three trophies – the Copa America, Finalissima and their third World Cup to establish themselves as the most successful country in football with 21 trophies to their name.
