Amazon Prime Video has officially ordered a TV series based on PlayStation’s 2018 video game God of War. Earlier this year, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan acknowledged that a God of War TV adaptation was in the works, but declined to reveal much else about the project. And while information are still nonexistent when it comes to the actors, Amazon has today verified that this God of War TV programme is very much moving forward.
Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television declared the TV version of God of War is definitely occurring in a new press release. Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time) will direct the series, with Mark Fergus (Iron Man) and Hawk Ostby (The Expanse) writing and producing. Cory Barlog, the director of the God of War video game, will also serve as an executive producer.
Amazon also stated that the programme will be a direct adaptation of the 2018 God of War game, which picks up long after Kratos’ journeys in the Greek realm.
“The series follows Kratos, the God of War, who, after exiling himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece, hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard,” says the press release’s description of the TV series. “When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak—his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new Gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”
Overall, God of War is yet another commitment by Sony to broaden the reach of its numerous PlayStation assets. Sony is now working on live-action TV programmes for Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us, Twisted Metal, and now God of War. This is in addition to Uncharted, which was released in theatres last year and was quickly declared by Sony to be the start of a new film franchise for the firm. While Sony will only continue to create new games on the PlayStation 5, it is apparent that the company is also working hard to diversify and broaden the reach of its properties outside of the video game medium.
