After Denmark’s impressive performances in the Euros and the World Cup qualifiers, many expected them to be one of the dark horses at the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar. However, they were very underwhelming in their group stage fixtures, and were knocked out after a defeat to Australia in their last game.
The tenth ranked side in the world were the favourites to make it through alongside France. But failing to produce on the pitch, they finished at the bottom of their group instead.
Denmark disappoint in 2022 World Cup group stage despite big expectations
Denmark scored just once in their three group stage games, despite being able to score 30 during the qualifying stages.
While we could say that the pressure of the big stage got to them, they have been able to deliver when the stakes were high in the past – namely, the Euros. Failure to deliver in the attacking third at the most difficult stage ended their hopes of making it through alongside France.
And they did so without winning a single game. Their opening clash against Tunisia ended in a goalless draw, while they were beaten by both France and Australia. It will now be a time to regroup for the national team, and with a lack of quality up front, it will be difficult to deliver for them unless they get things sorted out in attack.
