In the next three weeks, there will be no more ‘unknown’ callers on your phone since the Indian government is preparing to launch its own Truecaller-like app that would not only allow users to see the name of the caller but will also assist consumers.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is apparently working on a new feature that would be a comprehensive type of caller identification based on the user’s KYC.
P.D. Vaghela, Trai’s chairwoman, told the Hindustan Times on Wednesday that Trai has held multiple stakeholder engagements to resolve the concerns.
“The new feature should be rolled out in the next two to three weeks,” he added
Truecaller is a Swedish startup that uses the Internet to provide caller-identification, call-blocking, flash-messaging, call-recording, Chat & Voice functions.
When registering for the service, users must supply a normal cellular phone number. The app is accessible for both Android and iOS devices.
It was in September when TRAI secretary V Ranghunandan told, “We have this reference from the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) to have new mechanism that will show the KYC-based names on users’ phone displays, whenever they receive a call. We are discussing with service providers, and we are working on this…We need to continuously track spam calls in India.”
