Qualcomm Snapdragon Gen 2 is officially based on the 4nm Process Node

Qualcomm has officially unveiled its flagship processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 after an early leak provided some last-minute information about it. The new SoC is identified by the model number SM8550-AB and was manufactured using a 4nm design.

Significant advancements in power efficiency are made with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The new Kryo CPU, according to Qualcomm, offers up to a 40% gain in efficiency along with a performance boost of 35%. Surprisingly, the configuration is different even though the core clock rates are the same as those found in the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. For instance, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 now has four performances running at 2.80GHz in addition to the Cortex-X3 core, which is now running at 3.20GHz.

The remaining three efficiency cores, which operate at 2.00GHz, may tackle the less demanding jobs. The newest Adreno GPU claims power savings of up to 45 percent and performance increases of up to 25 percent. Additionally, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the first GPU to support Vulkan 1.3 and OpenGL ES 3.2, as well as the most recent in graphics technologies, including hardware-accelerated ray tracing. Along with UFS 4.0 storage, LPDDR5X memory support up to 4,200MHz has also been enabled, enabling a more responsive smartphone with faster read and write rates.

Additionally, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is capable of driving 4K panels at up to 60Hz or QHD+ displays at up to 144Hz.

Additionally, the chipset now supports AV1, which enhances video streaming. Speaking of streaming video, the new silicon’s ability to playback 8K video at 60FPS demonstrates its strength in this field. Regarding the cameras, we previously stated that the new 200MP HP3 sensor from Samsung had been modified to work with this chipset, and although that is true, it will also function without a hitch with Sony hardware.

A triple 18-bit ISP (Image Signal Processor) can handle a single 200MP device or up to three primary 36MP cameras working together. Qualcomm recommends 108MP sensors for no shutter lag. 8K HDR footage at 30FPS is now available for video recording, up from 8K 24FPS last year. The 4K resolution supports 120FPS high-framerate video capture, and 720p video can reach 960FPS. Qualcomm is the pinnacle of wireless technology in terms of connectivity.

It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon X70 5G modem with peak downlink speeds of 10Gbps and uplink rates of 3.5Gbps, enabling mmWave and sub-6GHz networks. The processor supports Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) networks, and the new FastConnect 78000 standard helps boost speeds to 5.8Gbps, up from 3.6Gbps on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 of the previous iteration. There has Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, which also supports 48kHz lossless streaming.
