Luka Modric has announced that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be his last tournament with Croatia. The veteran was the best player of the competition in 2018, when he led his country to the finals of the World Cup in Russia before losing to France.

For all his contributions to the Croatian national team, he will no doubt go down as the best-ever player to come out of the country. And we will be able to see the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner play in the greatest football tournament one final time.

“I am aware that I am of a certain age and that this is my last competition in the Croatian National team,” Modric told Fifa+.

The midfielder has been in remarkable form for Real Madrid over the last few seasons. And even at the age of 37, he is putting in man of the match performances in La Liga as well as Europe.

While it was fully expected that this edition would be Luka Modric’s final World Cup, the confirmation from the man itself makes it set in stone. It remains to be seen whether he will announce his retirement from club football at the end of the season, following the spectacle in Qatar.
