The 2022 FIFA World Cup had ended on 18th December, 2022. Over the years, it has gained a reputation of being not only the most prestigious but also one of the most expensive tournaments in the world. With that in mind, here are the top 8 most expensive editions of the tournament ever played.

8. United States 1994: $500 million 

The United States edition of the tournament in 1994 had the highest average attendance of all time at 63,991. Brazil won that year, defeating Italy at the Rose Bowl in California. They will host the World Cup again in 2026. 

7. France 1998: $2.3 billion 

In 1998, the number of competing nations increased from 24 to 32. France selected ten cities to host the tournament and also emerged victorious in front of their home fans. 

6. South Africa 2010: $3.6 billion

The entire vibe of the first African edition of the FIFA World Cup remains iconic to this day. Spain emerged as the winner against the Netherlands, with the country selecting ten different cities for games to be played. 

5. Germany 2006: $4.3 billion 

The 2006 edition saw Italy win the FIFA World Cup. But despite having impressive infrastructure, Germany spent a considerable amount on improving their facilities – which resulted in them providing outstanding hospitality to their guests. 

4. Japan and Korea 2002: $7 billion 

2002 saw a huge jump in the cost – with the competition costing more than three times as much as the previous edition. The likes of Turkey and South Africa surprised the world, finishing third and fourth respectively while Brazil became champions. 

3. Russia 2018: $11.6 billion 

The most recent edition of the FIFA World Cup saw France win the World Cup in Russia. The country significantly invested in their hospitality, turfs and their stadiums to host the iconic tournament. 

2. Brazil 2014: $15 billion 

The 2014 edition of the FIFA World Cup saw spending soar in preparation for the tournament. The investment served a dual purpose, with the 2016 Olympics also being played in Brazil. Moreover, this edition also saw the introduction of the goal-line technology and anti-doping tests by FIFA

1. Qatar 2022: $220 billion 

While other countries invested in revamping their existing stadiums, Qatar built eight brand new stadiums across the country – spending an eye-watering $220 billion to host the World Cup. But, they have also been heavily criticised for grossly violating the human rights of the workers who were employed.
